Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)

Safe and Sound Protocol

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a gentle, research-based listening intervention designed to support nervous system regulation. Using specially filtered music, SSP helps your body shift into a state of greater calm, safety, and connection.

SSP is based on Polyvagal Theory, which explains how our nervous system responds to stress and safety. When the nervous system feels overwhelmed or on edge, it can impact emotions, focus, relationships, and overall well-being. SSP works from the bottom up, helping your system feel more regulated so that other therapeutic work can be more effective.

How SSP Works

SSP involves listening to specially processed music through headphones, with guidance and support from your therapist throughout the process. While the core program is approximately five hours in total, it is not completed all at once.

Sessions are paced and broken down based on your nervous system’s capacity, meaning the process may take place over days or weeks. Some individuals may also benefit from repeating parts of the program to support deeper and more lasting regulation.

The music is designed to gently stimulate the vagus nerve, which plays a key role in helping the body feel safe, calm, and socially engaged. As the nervous system becomes more regulated, many people notice improvements in how they feel, think, and relate to others.

At times, you may also notice shifts in your body or emotions as your system adjusts. Your therapist will support you throughout the process to ensure the experience feels safe, manageable, and paced appropriately for you.

A Complement to Therapy

SSP can be used on its own or alongside other therapies such as EMDR and parts work. By supporting the nervous system first, it can make it easier to process emotions, engage in therapy, and create lasting change.

Our team will guide you through the process, tailoring the pace and experience to ensure it feels safe, supportive, and aligned with your individual needs.
